Beckworth Emporium is given green light for glasshouse extensions

Beckworth Emporium will mark its first year of trading with a dramatic extension – including two new glasshouses at the Mears Ashby site.

Planning permission has been granted for the emporium to build a 2084m2 glasshouse at the rear of nursery as well as for an extension to the car park, creating an additional 65 spaces.

The new 80m x 25.6m glasshouse will enable the emporium to grow all of its own bedding plants, herbaceous perennials and vegetable plants on-site, all of which will be sold solely at Beckworth. Work has begun onsite and is expected to conclude in mid March.

David Brown, co-owner of Beckworth, said: “We are delighted that we can begin work on the extension of Beckworth. The new glasshouse will enable us to provide customers with a wider range of unusual plant varieties. By having our experts grow the plants on-site, we will cut down on transportation costs and will be able to pass these savings on to our customers.”

A second glasshouse (36m x10m) has also been approved by planners. This will be for retail purposes and will stock the bedding plants that have are grown at Beckworth as well as a wide selection of seeds, bulbs and gardening products. This retail glasshouse will be open to the public from Easter.
